Art of Nature

the earth's flora has been admired since the dawn of man delicate and short lived but what if this magnificence was prolonged?

The artists at Nature's Creations have captured a plethora of these natural shapes as unique jewelry for a lifetime of admiration. A Washington area company since the mid 70's, Nature's Creations has been gathering local objects from nature such as leaves, herbs and blossoms. They then encase them in copper through a unique process called artistic electroforming. The base organic item is coated with powdered copper then carefully enveloped in microscopic sheets of copper. The resulting form is used as a model for others or directly sculpted into wearable art.

As a final finish the jewelry is patinaed (oxidized with the greens/blues/browns of copper) and highlighted with paints or layered with precious metals. After completion the representation of the delicate veining, natural form and random imperfections is remarkable.

Dennis Ray, Managing Designer of Nature's Creations, explains that artistic electroforming of nature was first attempted in Copenhagen in the 1950's. Our work, he goes on to say was started in Colorado with the Aspen leaves captured in copper by an Uncle, Richard "Cash" Cashman. He started encasing Rocky Mountain Flora in the 1960's while he played Bluegrass music. His basic methods formed the foundation for the technics that we presently use today. "I can take a live blossom and freeze it in copper within moments of picking it... capturing forever the full living image as a timeless sculpture" says Ray - with the confidence of artist impassioned by 20 years of experimentation and creativity.

Ray has worked with many of the top horticultural organizations in the world exploring new designs, creating specialty works for commemorative or fund raising campaigns. The work can be seen at numerous arboretum and museum shops as well as every major Flower Show in the country. Visit www.leafpin.com for more information.

This work truly is... Jewelry for the Seasons!

Dennis Ray

I create unique natural botanical jewelry designs using artistic copper electroforming techniques. Even after encasing the natural cutting in copper it remains safe inside the work. I developed my application of this art form as a high school science project and it has been my passion for several decades. Creating special projects from historic trees or winery grape leaves is especially motivating. Nature is amazing and I am very lucky to work with it in my American Craft.
